The patience and dedication of Chinese artists is embodied in a new exhibition of Chinese Snuff Bottles carved from jade—a stone more rigid than iron. With a hardness of 6.5 on the Mohs scale (iron is 4 to 5), the jade bottles were polished from boulders and sculpted with intricate details of landscapes and poems, sometimes taking artists several years to complete.
“Jade is a very stubborn stone,” said Amy Hofland, Director of The Crow Collection. “It’s practically impossible to carve. Craftsmen had to abrade the stones with oxide and sand. Given the details of these tiny bottles, this makes the exhibition even more extraordinary, and an honor to host at our museum.”
The Crow Collection is one of the few museums in America to showcase Chinese Snuff Bottles. The second in a series of Chinese snuff bottle exhibitions, the CARU Collection came to the museum from a private collection, and features 62 exclusively jade bottles from the Qing dynasty (1644-1911).
The CARU Collection will run May 19 - Sept. 2 at The Crow Collection of Asian Art. The museum is free to the general public, and located at 2010 Flora Street in the heart of the Dallas Arts District. It is open 10am-5pm Tuesday through Sunday, closed on Mondays and open late until 9pm on Thursdays. Free docent-guided tours are available at select times.
