Dance is the artistic movement of the body in a rhythmic way, usually to music and within a given space, for the purpose of expressing an idea, emotion, or simply taking delight in the movement itself.

Join Ahila Gulasekaram for a lecture demonstration that will explore the fundamentals of Bharata Natyam, an ancient dance form from Southern India. Learn basic Bharata Natyam movements that are designed to increase your core strength, balance, physical agility and mental alertness.

Gulasekaram has been nurturing her love for Bharata Natyam over the past three decades. She is a disciple of Ramya Harishankar, the award winning Artistic Director/Choreographer of the California based Arpana Dance Company (ADC). As a principal dancer of ADC, Gulasekaram has performed in all of the company’s major productions and has toured extensively throughout the US, Europe and India.

A recipient of the Kohinoor Award for Classical Arts and Culture, her dancing was more recently recognized with the LA Treasures Award, as well as the Artist Resource for Completion Grant from the Durfee Foundation.
