Escape the summer heat and explore the serenity and beauty of the Crow Collection of Asian Art Sculpture Garden. Become inspired by the various sculptures, ranging from the historical to the contemporary, make bamboo ink paintings or even decorate your own Japanese bell. Get crafty by creating a Japanese screen or a replica of the museum’s guardian lions. If these activities do not pique your interest, take a seat with our Tibetan sweepers and enjoy a free movie under the shade. Either way, the garden is the perfect place to find your Zen.

ART ACTIVITY: CREATE A MAKARA

10 AM – 2 PM | Sculpture Garden

A Makara is a mythical composite, a creature with body parts of various animals joined together by imagination in art and lore. The hybrid power of the Makara is emphasized by combined parts of both terrestrial and aquatic animals.   Foreparts are usually mammalian, although the jaws are sometimes described as like those of a crocodile, and hindquarters are taken from fish, birds, and reptiles.  Most distinctively, Makaras have curled elephant- or manatee-like noses and wide, gaping jaws.  Stop by and visit with our most ancient piece in the Sculpture Garden and try your hand at creating your owncustom Makara.

ART ACTIVITY: BAMBOO INK PAINTING

10 AM – 2 PM | Sculpture Garden

The bamboo plant came under close observation in the Eastern culture because of its persistence and vegetative productivity. The plant came to be seen as an exemplar of moral force, and appreciating the bamboo was seen as an act of self-cultivation. Try your hand at bamboo ink painting and draw inspiration from the variety of bamboo plants found throughout our garden.

ART ACTIVITY: WARRIOR ARMOR

10 AM – 2 PM | Sculpture Garden

Every great warrior has their own armor to protect themselves. This stoic warrior, a loyal and brave guardian and protector, wears boots, armor, and military robes that evoke the style of the Three Kingdoms period (184-280).  Military heroes from this important time in Chinese history have been enduring subjects in Chinese art and literature. Come see the armor that adorns the Warrior that stands in our garden and make an armor chest plate for yourself.

ART ACTIVITY: JAPANESE BELL

10 AM –2 PM | Sculpture Garden

Large bells were commonly used in the Edo period to indicate time in many Japanese communities. They were often paid for by collecting coins from parishes and locales, and then melted down for the metal. Assemble and decorate your own clay pot bell to commemorate your time here.

ART ACTIVITY: SCULPT A LION

10 AM – 2 PM | Sculpture Garden

In China, pairs of carved stone lions (shi) are placed as guardians outside entrances to convey protection and noble authority. Our Sculpture Garden has two distinct pair of lions, the Guardian Lions off Flora Street and Shi of East and West off Ross Street.  The Lioness (on the left) is a concentration of female yin energy, toying with her cub, an assurance of continuity. The Lion (on the right) is resplendent with yang energy with his paw resting on an embroidered ball, which is a toy functioning as an image of the complete extent and unity of his domain. Using “Model Magic,” design, mold, and decorate your own lion to bring home.
