BONSAI DESIGN — FREE CLASS ON JUNE 3, 2017 AT SUNSHINE MINIATURE TREES
The principle rules of bonsai design influence every aspect of potting, trimming and shaping at Sunshine Miniature Trees. Even cactus gardens suggest the same sense of meditative balance, calmness and modesty that we see in bonsai.
Most teachers of bonsai design begin with the “laws of nature.” There are schools of bonsai that emphasize that natural growth elements are foremost in importance. Other bonsai schools give the bonsai’s creator, or master, a more dominant role in controlling the design. Most schools, however, share a reverence for three basic Zen concepts:
- Yugen: An effort to define the subtle mystery behind the physical.
- Wabi: the sense of calmness, quiet and modesty that the viewer participates in.
- Sabi: Simplicity and age contribute to a subtle beauty.
Another almost universal theme in bonsai is that of bringing everything (form, line and space) together into a harmonious balance. We see this in the Taoist use of Yin-Yang, thrust and resolution, positive and negative, horizontal and vertical, and on and on. However, the bonsai enthusiast is always aware that the sense of balance must be limited by the rule of asymmetry and that bonsais, like nature, are asymmetrical.
Many of the fundamental design elements and most of the basic “how to care for them” concepts are discussed in their free bonsai class that is going to be held at Sunshine Miniature Trees on Saturday, June 3, 2017 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Richard Sunshine will lead the class.
