Now in its third year, the Breathe program invites local veterans and first responders to gather for monthly workshops centered around the practices of Qigong and art-making In April, join Army veteran Jacob Valdez to explore photography. Valdez is a combat wounded veteran who served in the United States Army for 13 years. During his many deployments around the world he found creative refuge in photography and today he continues to travel and create dynamic digital photographs that capture obscure and overlooked details in the world around us. Participants will work together to capture moments in the city and in nature outside of the museum (weather permitting). Phone cameras will work for the photography activity, but you are welcome to bring a personal camera to use if you would like!  In May, you will use these photos to create a multi-media collage.

This month’s qigong practice will focus on the third of eight principles: Minding the Breath. The Crow Collection is proud to partner with SimplyAware to offer quality qigong training for each workshop. Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, the practice of qigong involves simple movement to improve breathing, posture, and Breathe_April 2018_WEBmental focus. Learn more about Qigong with the video below of SimplyAware instructor Chris Bouguyon demonstrating the Golden Ball practice.

LOGISTICS: Due to most of the museum being under construction, this workshop will take place in the Crow Collection’s offices on the 35th floor of the Trammell Crow Center. Upon arrival, please meet in the Trammell Crow Center Lobby. The Crow Collection will validate for parking in the Trammell Crow Center Parking Garage, so be sure to bring your parking ticket with you. For parking instructions, click here.

Register in advance to receive a free Breathe T-shirt at the end of the first workshop you attend! Lunch will be provided for all participants.

Now in its third year, the Breathe program invites local veterans and first responders to gather for monthly workshops centered around the practices of Qigong and art-making. In April’s Breathe workshop, Army veteran Jacob Valdez shared his story and photography, and participants took photos outdoors, capturing details we often pass by without noticing. In May, participants will create multimedia artworks with these photos, drawing inspiration from artists who combine photography with other mediums, such as ink painting and collage. Participants are welcome to bring other photos they would like to work with but it is not required.

The Crow Collection is proud to partner with SimplyAware to offer quality Qigong training for each workshop. In May, we will focus on the principles of Expansion and Absorption. Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, the practice of Qigong involves simple movement to improve breathing and posture and manage stress and pain. Learn more about Qigong with the video below of SimplyAware instructor Chris Bouguyon demonstrating the Golden Ball practice.
