Celebrate a wonderful month of Asian holidays, including Buddha’s birthday! View a special birthday book that is an artistic tribute to Buddha’s image in art over the centuries, including pieces from the museum’s collection. Make traditional Japanese “carp kites,” and try your hand at leaf rubbings with one of Japan’s most iconic and beautiful plants, the Japanese Maple. And of course there will also be yoga, face painting, origami, and a writing workshop with the Writer’s Garret. There is truly something for everyone!

Celebrating its 11th anniversary, AsiaFest 2014 will showcase the rich cultures of Asia: Japan and Korea in the north; China, Taiwan, and the Philippines to the east; Vietnam and Malaysia in the south; and Bangladesh, India, and Nepal in the southeast. The numerous cultural demonstrations, performances, and vendors will provide a fun and engaging time for your entire family.

This free program introduces children (ages 12 and under) and their adult companions to fun and inspiring ways to enjoy art together.  Each session features a brief gallery activity and a related studio-art project. No advance registration for this drop-in program; space is limited to 20 children, plus adults. Sign up at the entrance to the education studios in the Renzo Piano Pavilion, beginning one hour before the program.

This Bollywood class taught by Ahila offers to improve your dancing, build rhythm and get a great work out to the latest and greatest Bollywood hits! This high-energy bhangra and bollywood class is catered to beginners. Bollywood dance is a blend of Indian Classical and folk dance with elements of hip-hop, Latin, jazz, modern and belly dance. Bhangra is a folk dance from Punjab that has gained popularity for its invigorating music (the dhol drum) and energetic steps. No prior dance experience is needed and please wear comfortable clothing. This class will improve your dance technique and rhythm, enhance your overall fitness and most importantly, is a lot of fun!

Ahila Gulasekaram has been nurturing her love for Bharata Natyam (Classical Indian Dance) for the past 30 years. She is a disciple of Ramya Harishankar, the award winning Artistic Director/Choreographer of the California based Arpana Dance Company (ADC). As a principal dancer and senior member of ADC, she has performed extensively within Southern California and has toured with the company throughout the US, Europe and India.
