Join Executive Director, Amy Lewis Hofland, for an afternoon tea and talk with Susan Bauer-Wu, President of the Mind & Life Institute, and Ven Geshe Lhakdor, Director of the Library of Tibetan Works & Archives and former translator and assistant to the Dalai Lama.
This moderated discussion will focus on mindfulness and compassion and how these practices are relevant today.
Join Cambodia’s most internationally prominent contemporary artist, Sopheap Pich,
as he discusses Rang Phnom Flower (2015), his most ambitious single-form sculpture to date, with our Curator of Asian Art, Dr. Jacqueline Chao. Pich’s oversized sculpture conveys the power of nature and also prompts visitors to consider concepts of scale. The twenty-five-foot long sculpture, composed of hundreds of strands of rattan and bamboo, will be on view at the Crow Collection of Asian Art from June 24, 2017 through January 7, 2018 as part of Hidden Nature: Sopheap Pich.

About the Artist:
Sopheap Pich (b. 1971) is recognized today as Cambodia’s most internationally prominent contemporary artist. Born in Battambang, Cambodia, he moved with his family to the United States in 1984, and received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1999. In 2002, he returned to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, where he continues to be based. Pich is known for working with local materials such as bamboo, rattan, burlap from rice bags, beeswax and earth pigments gathered from around Cambodia and making sculptures that are inspired by bodily organs, vegetal forms, and abstract geometric structures. His childhood experiences during the genocidal conditions of late 1970s Cambodia has had a lasting impact on his work, informing its themes of time, memory and the body.

7:00 – 8:00 pm | Artist Jacob Hashimoto and curator Jacqueline Chao discuss Hashimoto’s newest site-specific installation and exhibition JACOB HASHIMOTO: Clouds and Chaos.
8:00 – 10:00 pm | Bring a friend or make some new ones, as you create a collaborative work of art in the spirit of JACOB HASHIMOTO: Clouds and Chaos. Following a conversation with curator Jacqueline Chao and Jacob Hashimoto, each team of artists will have one hour to create an artwork using only the materials provided. This friendly competition culminates with each participant voting on each team’s work, with the winners receiving a signed catalog from Jacob Hashimoto and an artist level membership. Beer and wine will be available. Must be 21 or older to participate.
