Happy Saga Dawa!

Happy Saga Dawa, Tibet!
May 25th is Saga Dawa, which is a day of celebration during the month of Vesak in Tibet.

In Buddhist nations across Asia, old and young are preparing
lanterns, scrubbing temples and gathering flowers and decorations in preparation for the holiest month of the year: Vesak

Vesak commemorates three defining moments in the life of the historic Shakyamuni Buddha over two and a half millennia ago– His birth, His Enlightenment, and His Passing to Parinirvana. All three events in the Buddha’s life were said to have happened during the 4th month of the lunar calendar, which coincides with the month of May on our calendars!

Though the whole month is a commemoration, the celebrations culminate on the day of the full moon in May which is May 24 or 25 depending on the country in which it takes place.

Festivities occur in all the following places:
Sri Lanka
Malaysia (Hari Wesak)
Cambodia (Vesak Bochea)
Thailand (Visakha Bucha)
India (Buddha Jayanti)
Nepal (Buddha Purnima)

During this period of time, it is believed that all positive and negative actions are multiplied, making the month especially important to be watchful of our acts. Activities to accumulate merits include cleaning temples,  giving alms to the poor, going to temples to receive blessings and make prayers, wearing white, refraining from eating meat, and  setting free captive animals.

With that, be extra aware of your own acts this month and take those extra steps to purify one’s mind and humble the ego!

There is no way to Happiness, Happiness is the way.” Lord Buddha
