ARTIST: Nam June Paik (1932-2006, Korean-American)

Widely considered to be the father of video art and “credited with the first use (1974) of the term ‘electronic super highway’ to describe the future of telecommunications,” Nam June Paik was a Neo-Dada madman enthralled by televisions, electronic music and the idea that one day, there would be free circulation of video content worldwide. Electronic Superhighway: Continental U.S., Alaska, Hawaii is an overlarge map of the country, streaked with beams of neon light; Nam June Paik was fascinated when he arrived here in 1964 to find the new and thriving interstate highway system, which “offered everyone the freedom to see the U.S.A. in your Chevrolet.”
