ARTIST: Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988, Japanese-American)

The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum, 1983-85

HOLIDAY: Greenery Day (Japan)

Prolific sculptor and political activist Isamu Noguchi was an artist who had strong beliefs and yet belonged to no particular artistic movement during his long career. Toward the end of a life spent collaborating with other artists in every sub discipline imaginable, Noguchi opened The Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum in New York, which he designed himself, and which “marked the culmination of his commitment to public spaces.” It includes a serene outdoor sculpture garden in a big city, and is an ideal place to discover on today, Greenery Day (in Japan).
