ARTIST: Takashi Murakami
Takashi Murakami, born in 1962 in Tokyo, Japan, combines traditional Japanese painting styles and aesthetics with pop culture influences. Coining the term ‘superflat’, Murakami creates wide variety of media, such as paintings, sculptures, and animation, that comment on the social class disparities in Japan.
Murakami has also placed his mark on the commercial scene, notably collaborating with fashion designers such as Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton, even developing the album artwork for Kanye West’s Graduation. As a result, Takashi Murakami is widely considered one of the most influential contemporary Asian artists.
