31 Days of Asia – Artist Highlight

Liu Xiaodong is a Chinese artist who was born in 1963 and gained popularity during the Neo-Realist movement in China during the 1990s. Heavily influenced by painter Lucian Freud, he utilizes brusque swaths of color and texture and a sense of harsh reality in his paintings of everyday people in their everyday environments. In his work, East, the workers are a prime example of his focus on the developing economy in China – appropriate for acknowledging Chinese, Pakistani and Philippine Labour Day.
